Supervised Practice
The Pharmacists Board of Queensland has the following two categories relating to supervised practice. Please see below to obtain relevant information for Australian or New Zealand trained new graduates and Overseas trained graduates (other than New Zealand trained).
Australian or New Zealand Graduate
Australian or New Zealand pharmacy students are required to successfully complete the following before being eligible for General Registration:
- 1824 hours of supervised practice over at least 48 weeks; and
- the Pharmaceutical Society of Queensland's Pre-Registration Training Program.
The 1824 hours of supervised practice may be undertaken in the following manner:
- 1824 hours of supervised practice, at the one location, over at least 48 weeks; or
- at least 912 hours at one location over at least 24 weeks; and
the remaining 912 hours at different locations over at least 24 weeks - (The Board recommends that the minimum number of hours under one preceptor to count toward the supervised practice component of registration be not less than 152 hours over four weeks).
The total 1824 hours supervised practice must be completed within 3 years of the student obtaining their pharmacy degree.
Please note:
The 1824 hours supervised practice cannot commence until the student has successfully completed their pharmacy degree. The student will be required to provide the Board with the completed Commencement of Supervised Practice form, which can be downloaded from the Application Forms page of this website.
Registration after completion of supervised practice
Students are advised that registration after completion of the supervised practice period may take up to 14 days from the time their application is received in the office. The Board recommends that both students and prospective employers take this timeframe into account when discussing employment details. The Completion of Supervised Practice form can be downloaded from the Application Forms page of this website.
Overseas Graduate
Overseas trained graduate pharmacy students must apply to the Board for approval to undertake their supervised practice period in Queensland.
The Board will assess the graduate pharmacy student's training to ascertain whether it can be deemed equivalent to a current Australian or New Zealand Pharmacy Qualification before granting approval or otherwise.
If you wish to apply to the Board, you will need to write to the Board seeking approval and include an original academic transcript detailing your pharmacy studies so that the Board can make an informed decision as to equivalency.
